New Rankings

As requested by a reader, I have removed the "Marketability" ranking. I have also shifted a few stations around after further perusal and here are my new findings:

The New Top Ten:

10) (15) Buccaneers: 14 (15.4) (I: 5, H: 27, A: 12, MC: 12)

6) (2) Eagles: 11.25 (10.2) (I: 2, H: 11, A: 16, MC: 16)

5) (3) Vikings: 11.25 (10.6) (I: 13, H: 25, A: 5, MC: 2)

4) (7) Cardinals: 11 (12.8) (I: 10, H: 20, A: 4, MC: 10)

3) (4) Steelers: 10.75 (10.8) (I: 24, H: 2, A: 11, MC: 6)

2) (10) Raiders: 10.5 (14.4) (I: 7, H: 6, A: 20, MC: 9)

#1 NFL logo:

1) (1) Patriots: 7.5 (6.4) (I: 17, H: 7, A: 3 (2), MC: 3)

So even though I dropped the Patriots a notch in a category and removed the "Marketability" category they still fall to the top spot.

I encourage any of you to create your own rankings. Or even your own categories. If you have new categories that you think I should include, I'm happy to do so! Keep those suggestions coming!

Here's a thought. Find a friend who is not a huge football fan and provide them with a list of teams and logos for them to match -- use their data for the Mascot Connection section. I think teams like the 49ers would rank higher because they've been around so long and someone like me might make the connection between the SF/and San Francisco. Also, I'm thinking teams like the Bengals, Jaguars, Jets, Redskins, Falcons, Colts, Cardinals, and Raiders should rank higher than the Patriots -- and in something like this order -- Raiders (it SAYS it), Jets (same logic), Jaguars (it's a picture of Jaguar), Falcons (same logic), Redskins (same logic), Cardinals (same logic), Colts (what goes with a horseshoe better than a COLT, maybe a bronco??). Meanwhile the picture of a Patriot is inferred -- red, white and blue - a "patriot" is not by definition a stripy-headed star-clad man-face.

Ok, well, if you're outside of New England anyway.

There may be some misunderstanding with what I meant by Mascot Connection.

Your suggestion is actually what I envisioned when I was ranking that category. But I did have a few other criteria for a higher ranking:

First, by mascot I meant "name." Not necessarily whatever costume represents your team.

Second, if your logo was a picture of your mascot you scored higher than if it was just words. The Jets' logo is not a jet. It's the word Jets, they would not score as high as the dolphins.

Third, you ranked lower than some others if you could be confused for a different team. It would be very easy to confuse the falcons for the eagles and vice versa. Or the ravens or the seahawks (what is a seahawk?) or the cardinals. Same thing goes for the colts. Are the colts the horse, or the hoofprint? Or is one of those the Cowboys? Is the black cat the jaguar or the panther? Are the Redskins the Native American or the Arrowhead?

Fourth, logo recognition is more represented in the History category, not the mascot connection. I bet 75% of the population knows that the Green G is the Packers, but what does the Green G have to do with a "Packer"? No idea. Low score.

If you have a list of mascots and all of the logos you certainly can't confuse the Viking for anything but a Viking. Nor could you confuse the Patriot for anything but a Patriot. Same goes for the Rams, Dolphins, and Lions. Then we get into the teams that aren't actually images of their logo, but they can't be mistaken because the words are there: Jets and Raiders. From there we have to determine which of the possible confused are the least confusing: The birds, then the cats, followed by the western theme. Then we have the logos that have nothing to do with their mascots: "ny" what does that have to do with a GIANT? "SF" = 49ers? No. "C" is a Bear? I don't think so.

I hope my explanation provides a little more insight as to what I was aiming for with this category. But feel free to make your own list with your own parameters! I'd love to see it!

Oh, and I wanted be sure that the connection was with the mascot, not the city. Which is why San Fran, New York, and Green Bay score so low.
