Let's Talk Film

This is quite the momentous announcement! Our good friends in Japan have given us a fantastic Annibirthmas gift: A year of Netflix!

Now that we have unlimited access to all the movies we could ever want to see there will be far more movie reviews appearing on this blog.

Here's where you come in: I've often had people say to me, "Hey, what did you think of this movie?" Or "Oh, there was a movie I was hoping you'd seen so we could discuss it, but now I forgot what it was!" And even the occasional, "Could you explain this movie to me..."

This post will be a permanent link for you to recommend movies to us. Movies that you think that we will enjoy. Movies you want to hear my thoughts on. Movies that made you go "huh?!"

Start recommending and I'll start reviewing!

(Seriously, I am so excited!)

Once.

Did you (or will you) like it as much as I did?

There Will Be Blood.

Probably on dvd soon, within a month or two. Thoughts on the violent content for a girl who's not into violent content? Is DDL's performance as brilliant as everyone says it is?

Juno.

Just 'cause I wanna know what you'd say about it.

Marc...I am thrilled to see that you have gladly seized the great responsibility that comes with the combination of 1) owning a netflix subscription, 2) having mad film critic skills, and 3) being very opinionated about everything. I am already excited about your future reviews. ( I will also be interested in Vanessa's take...can you make that a feature..."just HER opinion."

p.s. That Pats signed Randy Moss. The Pats signed Randy Moss. The Pats signed Randy Moss. I figured the would get it done. But still...The Pats signed Randy Moss!!!

Dawn. I saw Once. I really liked the music and fully agreed with the Oscar nod. The more I learn about it (Truely Indy film, shot in 17 days) the more I like it. (As opposed to Blair Witch that was made to look like a truely Indy film that wasn't) It's one that I feel like I have to see again to fully appreciate.

My wife saw Juno, I have yet to see it.

I will definately see There Will Be Blood.

Noa, you're too kind. Not only for the gift, but for thinking I have such crazy film critic skills. I will definately get V in on this in offering her opinion.

THE PATS SIGNED RANDY MOSS (and from what I hear, it was cheap!)

Did you see/like Stardust? I really enjoyed it. Where does it rank with Princess Bride?

Marc said...

haven't seen it yet, it'll have to go on the list!

My recommendations. This is sort of my own personal list. I have seen the first 3 and want to see the last 3. Have you also heard of a film called Zeitgeist? Ron Paul appears in it and people keep telling me to see it. Apparently you can see it online for free. I'll have to find it somewhere. In the meantime, here are my recos. :) Hey, you asked!!!

1) Ralph Nader: An Unreasonable Man (documentary from all political opinions about the life of comsumer advocate and Presidential candidate Ralph Nader)
2) Baraka (beautiful undescribable film with pictures and music, commentary on man & environment without words)
3) American Experience: A Midwife's Tale (and any other American Experience PBS documentary)
4) The Business of Being Born (documentary by Ricki Lake & Abby Epstein about the obstetrics business in America)
5) America: Freedom to Fascism (Aaron Russo film about the controversial creation of the Federal Reserve)
6) The Real Dirt on Farmer John (documentary about the farmer behind the largest organic/biodynamic Community Supported Agriculture [CSA] farm in the country, located in rural north central IL)

Well, we have one on our list already: Business of being born. We'll have to look for the others. Unfortunately, while I'm finding Netflix has more movies than I've ever imagined. They don't seem to have an exhaustive list. There are movies they don't have! We'll get what we can. Thanks 2-10

Hey, I may be able to get my hands on some copies of America: From Freedom to Fascism. Someone I know was able to get a whole bunch of them for really cheap. Do you want one? I can send it to you. If I'm not confusing things, I believe Ron Paul appears in this film.

Also, here is the Zeitgeist movie:

I need to view it still...you know, when I get a spare 2 hours to myself. HA!

Let me know if you want me to send you a copy of AFTF...

Oh yeah, let me know what you think of The Business of Being Born... how timely, especially as you are going to welcome another little one into your family in the near future. :)

Wow, that movie list is expanding rapidly!!

Just saw Atonement. Perhaps you'll review that one in the future?

I thought it was good, intriguing, sad, and very pretty, but I felt it was a tad overrated. But that's expected a few months after Oscar hype. James McAvoy - loved him in Narnia - just wasn't a standout for me in this one. Best thing about it was the score, IMO.

I've read numerous friends' thoughts on The Business of Being Born and am now very curious about both of your opinions. I have no plans to see it but the viewpoints surrounding that topic are always hot-button!

Both of those are on our list. I'll see what I can do to bump them to the front. Thanks for your input, keep it coming!

we saw "21" this weekend and i thought it was totally fun. great escapism, just a shade too long - would love to read your review.

Marc said...

Well, I wasn't planning on reviewing 21, but if my readers request it, it shall be so. Keeps your eyes peeled for two reviews coming soon.

I know Juno was mentioned, but have you seen it yet? I'd like to hear your take on it/

Marc said...

the Queen saw it. maybe I'll just have her review it.

What did you think of "Gone Baby Gone" - saw it recently and liked it, wanted to see what you thought. I now have to see "The Prestige" because of you. Love your blog!

We watched Jumper last night. Wondered if you were planning a review for that one? As always, I'd love to hear your opinion :-)

Marc,

Any chance of reviewing the travelling pants 2?

Bill

We'll see, I wouldn't count it out point blank, depends of if we still have Netflix when it hits DVD.

Just out of curiosity, did you round out your Bourne viewing with the Ultimatum? And had y'all seen them before?

I love that series, so well-made and so much fun. Love Matt (of course), Joan Allen, David Straithairn in the last one. Good stuff.

I liked Charlie Bartlett. It was totally entertaining.

Marc said...

I agree. I was a little concerned, but the longer it went the more I let my guard down. I thought it was great!

Juno. now reviewed

Ooh, N x NW = Hitchcock's BEST. I love it!! The crop dusting scene alone is fabulous, better than entire movies built around the concept of suspense.

We didn't care for Proof either. Saw it about 2-3 years ago.

Marc said...

With Proof I felt that Paltrow had a great role handed to her. Great possibility for inner termoil and great waves with crests and troughs of personality and she totally flattened this character out. Blahzay. I didn't care. I wanted to know if the proof worked more than I cared about her, her family or her relationship with Jake.

Saw Frost/Nixon last week. Loved it. Want to see clips of the real interview now. And read the book. :o)

Marc-
We just watched "Gran Torino" the other night with Clint Eastwood. Would love to hear (read) your thoughts on it.

I can't WAIT to read your review of Made of Honor, the absolute worst romantic comedy I have seen in years. I felt insulted, it was so stupid.
