Selling Medocrity

I saw a preview for Tom Hank's newest film that proclaimed:

"Audiences and critics around the world agree: Angels and Demons is better than The Davinci Code!"

Is that the best they could come up with? I picture people standing outside the theater, shrugging and saying off-handedly, "Well, at least it was better than The DaVinci Code."

Isn't that like saying: "Sportscasters and fans alike believe that the 2007 Dolphins (1-15) were better than the 2008 Lions (0-16)!"

"Chefs and patrons both concur: week-old moldy mushroom soup is better than month-old maggot filled road kill!"

"Families everywhere declare: living in a run-down apartment is better than living in a cardboard box!"

Are we supposed to be impressed when they compare new crap with old crap and decide that new crap is better? Just wondering.

As one of your top fans, I have to say, come on Marc, you can do better than this! Is sarcasm really the BEST you can come up with on this one??

Whether we like it or not, DaVinci Code was a best seller and a big hit at the box office, and Angels and Demons is another Dan Brown novel turned movie, so the comparison is legit. For audiences that liked the first one, critics are saying this one is EVEN better.

And what does that mean? It means that the throngs of people who were pursuaded to question the divinity of Christ and the legitimacy of a secret society and an accompanying myth that contradict the Bible and Christian values are yet again lining up at the theater to digest more junk. And who are these people... they are our neighbors, friends, and family who are not in a saving relationship with Jesus.

If we can't speak intelligently about the claims set forth in these popular movies and address the issues that they raise, how can we lead them away from the lie toward the Truth?

Even if it is just a jumping off point to a much better discussion, I appreciate the opportunity it presents to intellegently discuss my faith.

This isn't sarcasm. I saw The DaVinci Code (I liked it better the first time when it was called American Treasure) and I found it to be boring, uncompelling, and in no way furthered the speculation put forth by Mr. Brown.

The point of this post was to say that if they are trying to sell me on seeing the new movie, they are going to have to do better than "It's better than The DaVinci Code!"

"A big hit" at the box office? It's 70 all time. It lost to Beverly Hills Cop! by over 17 million dollars!

I'm aware that Angels is the sequel and, as we all know, with one MAJOR exception (Empire) sequels are never as good as the originals.

I'm not suggesting that we boycott the movie, or refuse to discuss it. I'm simply saying that, from a film standpoint Code was not a good movie, regardless of it's "message." So saying that Angels is better isn't saying much.

I don't much care how many people go to this movie. Nothing legitimizes something you disagree with more than attempting to stop it. So, by all means, keep making movies that cause people to talk about faith. The Truth (yes, captial T) will win every time.

My eldest says "thanks" ... well that's what she would say if she weren't burried in her new Nintendo DSi and totally thrilled that summer is here! Yesterday was her last day of school. Love the secret decoder pictures in the latest post!! :-) Miss you guys. Can't believe I haven't met the Little Miss yet.
