Today's youth have it so hard! I was listening to one complain about her older brother the other day. She said, "It stinks! He listens to his Ipod so loud in the car that, even though he sits behind me in the mini van, I can hardly watch the movie!"
I don't think there's anything else I have to say about that.

That's hilarious! I know what you mean, though. We go on long car trips with our three boys and I don't know how my parents did it when I was a kid; we have a dvd player, gameboys, all sorts of doo-dads and what-nots that keep them entertained ... even on the 12 hour drive to my in-laws!

When K. was younger we used the DVD player all the time on long trips, but last summer we drove six hours to the family reunion and deliberately did not bring the DVD player. Each kid had a magna-doodle and a few other toys and it was the best trip ever!

when i was a kid, i had a walkman and our family atlas. i credit all of my american geography knowledge to those long road trips.
and i still don't have an ipod. someday i'll take someone's old one when they give it up for something newer and smaller.
We drove 12 hours/over 700 miles one way for a wedding with 2 toddlers...and no TV/DVD, iPods or electronic devices of any kind in the car. Our children do not watch TV or DVDs/movies of ANY kinda anyway. And they did just fine for their first road trip ever, so it CAN be done. And just think, if you don't start them off used to media/electronic devices, you won't have to agonize about 'weaning' them off of it later on when they become too dependent on them.
